Changing the world one nail polish at a time, meet Malina!

I love how we all have dreams and passions, and that they are each unique in their own way. I am super inspired by people who really just go after their dreams. This is Malina. She is one of my neighbors and for the longest time I just had major hair envy! ( her hair is amazing) But then I learned she is the owner and founder of Press & Hume, a nail polish line made from non-toxic, organic ingredients! How amazing is that!? She hand makes them all, and I own some, and they are awesome. She also is a woman of many other talents, that’s why I am super excited to featuring her today! So I won’t make you wait any longer, meet Malina.
Tell us about yourself!
Hi, I’m Malina, and during the day I work in higher education administration, and on the side I’m the creative force behind Press & Hume
, a creative crafting brand focused on bringing nontoxic, handmade nail polish and one-of-a-kind weavings to folks all across the country! I’m a self-proclaimed craft-hopper; I’ve done it all, from painting and pottery to knitting, sewing, crochet, watercolor, calligraphy, and screen printing (and a lot more). But I’ve recently settled on weaving and polish mixing – the two crafts keep me balanced and allow me to share something fun and unique with other people!
Other than that, I’m a Vandy undergrad alum and grad student who loves coffee, Dolly Parton, graphic novels, going to craft stores and thrift stores, sleeping in, traveling with my boyfriend, and eating/drinking our way through different cities. Thanks to Abbey for being so kind and featuring me on her blog!
what’s your fave song right now?
I’m a huge hip hop fan (I actually wrote my honors thesis back in college on hip hop), and I’ve been waiting approximately 84 years for Drake to drop his latest album, and he finally did at the end of April. So my favorite song right now is “Feel No Ways” from his album Views. It sounds like he’s singing the song from a time machine that traveled back to the 90s – it’s amazing.
what’s your favorite style to wear?
My style is first and foremost comfortable – if it hurts/itches/pinches/clings, I’m not wearing it! Secondly, I’d say my wardrobe is 95% neutrals and patterns so I can mix and match; I have to be able to get the most out of each piece I own. The only things I splurge on are shoes, and even then I buy maybe one pair a year – I’m a cheapskate! Oh and I hate matching, I always have to wear something that’s a little out of place or conflicting.
What’s your guilty pleasure snack-go-to?
Hmm, well, I can’t say I feel particularly guilty about it, but my favorite snack is Cape Cod chips and my handmade sour cream and onion dip. It’s so easy to make, it’s almost crazy for me NOT to eat a ton of it — right?? Here’s the recipe: about a cup of greek yogurt (I prefer Fage 0%), and about a tablespoon of onion soup mix. Just sprinkle the dry mix in the yogurt (use more or less depending on how strong you want the onion to come through), mix it up, and enjoy! Other than that, I make a mean oatmeal chocolate chip cookie – but you’ll get that recipe from my cold, dead fingers 😉
What’s your MUST-HAVE beauty item you can’t live with out?
Ironically, it’s not nail polish, ha. It’s my Elf eyebrow kit
– it’s like $3 and flawless.
Who’s the most influential person in your life and why?
That would probably be my boyfriend, Perry. He’s got such a positive outlook on life, and I don’t think I would have done half the things I’ve done recently if I didn’t have him looking at me saying, “Just do it, you dummy!” (but like, in a sweet way…)
What’s the 1 thing you want to accomplish that you haven’t yet?
Yikes, I can’t pick just one thing – I have tons I want to do! I heard Nicki Minaj say something recently that really resonated with me (as does most things she says – she’s so wise!). She said, “Before I could remember wanting to do anything else, I knew I wanted to be in charge.” And I think that’s at the crux of many of my goals: I want to be in charge at my job, I want to be in charge with my craft, I want to be the boss and be the best at what I do – period. It’s a lofty goal, but I’m happiest when I’m the top dog in all aspects of my life.
What’s your favorite thing in your closet?
I have this one lightweight, tan cardigan that I got at Target years ago. It’s like a comfort blanket to me; goes with anything, soft, comfy. I’d wear it everyday if that were a normal thing to do in society.
What’s your fave inspirational quote?
“Remember why you started.” I can be indecisive, so I hang this quote above my desk at work to remind me to think of why I wanted to do what I set out to do in the first place.
