Jenna, the woman behind the Yard.

aI have known this girl since the 9th grade. We were instantly friends, and it was a bit scary how much we were alike. She is actually the person who inspired me to start sewing. I was always so jealous of how crafty she was when we were in High school.

We shared a great love for crafts, food, and music. We used to listen to Courtney Love, The Smashing Pumpkins, No Doubt, and every movie soundtrack together. I remember we used to write out our favorite song lyrics on paper in fancy writing, and we’d plaster our bedroom doors in them. What do ya know that it is now a “thing” to write out quotes and lyrics. We started it. This girl continues to inspire me even though we live far away from each other. She’s even more crafty now than she was before, and she is one of the best moms out there. I admire her love for her family, I know they are in good hands with her. She has her own online store, and is a jack of all trades sort where She is capable of doing and making anything and everything. She pays attention to the detail in everything which I respect so much! I love her humor, and I want the world to know her too! So meet Jenna!

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Jenna and I’m so glad that Abbey asked me to be part of her blog! I’m a Lutheran mama of five and I love to sew and make casseroles! I have always loved to sew, but I was forced to get my hustle on when I lost my job in 2012. Its funny how far you can come when you don’t have an option to fail! I am blessed to no longer be a struggling single mother and now have the most loving life partner, Chris, that fully believes and supports my crazy! I am an imperfect person just trying to raise my little blended family the best way that I can and I try to create memories and traditions that my children can carry on with. I started my business called The Yard and I love it and am having a blast!

What’s your fave song right now?

I love music and I consider myself quite the music buff because I worked for a music store once FOR OVER A YEAR in high school.  hahah.  Anyhow, to be COMPLETELY honest with you – my favorite song right now is “Cake By The Ocean” by DNCE.  And i loved it even more once I found out this bonus… the lead singer is JOE JONAS!!!  hahah.  I sing it in my car with a wooden spoon that I keep in there for when such a jam comes on.  Seriously.

What’s your favorite style to wear?

I would say that I tend to dress more classy.  Like I’m not a regular mom, I’m a CLASSY mom.  I like to mix some trendy pieces in with my LLBean and I LOVE some hand-me-downs from my grandma.  She is a walking, talking Lands End ad.  Ill mix up some of her classic pieces with some Forever 21 or Target, or Walmart.

What’s your guilty pleasure snack-go-to?

I went on a health food kick a year ago and it has changed my life, and waist size!  But I have always kept a stash of chocolate chips in my pantry.  I grab a spoon, get into the peanut butter and then toss back a handful of chips.  Sometimes I need two to make it through the day!!!

What’s your MUST-HAVE beauty item you can’t live with out?

I have a favorite beauty item that i get FREAKED out if its not in stock.  It is from the dollar store.  It is my eyeliner.  It is awesome.  It is ONE DOLLAR!!!  I have been using it for over 5 years and it is one item that I think I can’t live without.  If i don’t have it on, my kids ask if I am sick.

Who’s the most influential person in your life and why?

The most influential person in my life is my father.  I am NOT a daddy’s girl by any means.  We actually didn’t always see eye to eye.  He is a man of few words and he is extremely smart.  I just never knew how to relate to him because our personalities are so different.  Anyway, after my brother died, my dad completely stepped up to the plate to be there for myself and for my sister.  He put his pain aside so that he could save us, guide us, lead us, and comfort us.  I am forever grateful for him standing up for the two of us when we really couldn’t stand up for ourselves.  I try to make him proud every day.  He really is the best that there is AND he is single if anyone is interested.  hahah.

What’s the 1 thing you want to accomplish that you haven’t yet?

One thing that I would like to accomplish is being on MTV True Life.  Seriously.  I don’t know why I want this, or what my “true life” even is, but its my dream.  I don’t know why its my dream, but it is.  I supposed applying for the show would be a good first step!  Maybe I’ll do that tomorrow.

What’s your favorite thing in your closet?

My favorite thing that is in my closet is a robe that I made in the 8th grade.  It is made entirely out of vintage hankies that my grandma and I hunted down one summer when antiquing.  I sewed the entire thing by hand and it is so special to me.

What’s your fave inspirational quote?

“When I feel a little low, I put on my favorite high heels to stand a little taller.” – Dolly Parton.
